On May 4, 2023, the Enforcement Branch (EB) officials in Kolkata conducted a criminal enforcement raid on a wholesaler in the bustling Burrabazar market on suspicion of selling counterfeit hand tools of a major company.
The hand tools were falsely branded as products of JK Files & Engineering Limited, a subsidiary of the Raymond Group. During the raid, a significant amount of counterfeit goods with an estimated total value of around four lakh rupees were recovered.
Following the confiscation, the EB officials filed a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 63, 65 of the Copyright Act, Section 120B, and Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the individuals responsible for the sale of these fake products. Counterfeit goods are becoming a growing concern in India, posing a risk to public safety while undermining legitimate businesses' efforts to produce and sell genuine products.
By cracking down on counterfeit goods, the EB is taking important steps to protect consumers and support legitimate businesses. Still, more must be done to address the root causes of the issue, including the lack of public awareness and education about the dangers of counterfeit products.
